Yang Xiaoyu is a retired teacher whose heart has a huge space for rescued dogs and cats. At sixty-five, Xiaoyun runs Common Home for Stray Animals. This shelter is home to 200 cats and 1,500 dogs.
All of which have been abandoned, abused, neglected, and left to die by their owners the busy streets of China.
Rescuing dogs from the meat trade
Dogs are among the casualties of China’s meat trade. Xiaoyun has long been wanting to put an end to this, so she partnered with animal activists. Since the partnership was formed, they have been able to rescue 360 dogs.
Each year, Xiaoyun makes it her goal to rescue more dogs from the meat trade. She wants to give them a better life.
The retired teacher has saved a total of $8,000. She travels 1,665 miles from Tianjin to Yulin so she can use the money to pay the traders and stop the meat trucks. In exchange, she asks that the dogs be given to her so she can rescue them from being slaughtered.
One paw at a time
Xiaoyun knows that she cannot give the dogs the best living conditions. She has already given up most of what she owns just so these dogs can live comfortably.
What’s more important to her is that she can give affection, love, care, water, food, and space to these dogs.
Each day, Xiaoyun wakes up at five in the morning and sleeps at ten in the evening. She is very hands-on when it comes to taking care of her rescued dogs and cats. She cooks their meals, and she makes sure that each one is cared for.
Most of these rescued animals are sick and have experienced the worst in the hands of their previous owners. This is why Xiaoyun tries her best to show each one of them love and kindness.
