If you wonder whether dogs need to say goodbye to their owners, you won’t wonder anymore after seeing this video of a dog named Mollie that got that opportunity. A recent Facebook video of Mollie and her owner, Ryan, shows us that heartbreaking moment.
At just 33 years old, Ryan Jessen had a ventricular brain hemorrhage in his home in California. He was brought to Rideout Memorial Hospital, in Marysville, California, where he was placed on a ventilator.
Doctors gave him no hope of his recovery, so the family began saying their goodbyes. They prepared for the inevitable. They included Mollie, Ryan’s dog, in that task. Ryan and Mollie had been together for the past six years.
Even though Ryan was not able to respond, Ryan’s family brought Mollie to the hospital to be by Ryan’s bedside one last time. Ryan’s sister, Michelle, captured the goodbye on camera and posted the video on Facebook.
The family didn’t know whether Ryan would know if any of them were there, including Mollie, but they felt Mollie deserved the same chance as the rest of the family to say goodbye.
Dogs are intelligent creatures, and surely Mollie would see Ryan and understand that her beloved owner was sick. They were right.
Dog Says a Sorrowful Goodbye
Ryan was out on a walk when he rescued Mollie as a stray puppy, and the two had been fast friends ever since. They had as close a bond as any man and dog could have. So, the family wanted to make sure Mollie was prepared for life without Ryan.
When Mollie saw Ryan lying in the hospital bed, the family said that she was hesitant to approach him. She knew something was wrong. Ryan’s sister chose to share the video, and she’s glad she did. Many responded and commented with their own stories of loss.

Ryan’s family maintains that the online support they received, along with their faith and support from friends has helped them through their grief. Ryan also became an organ donor, and the family was informed that his heart went to a teenager who also lives in California.
What about Mollie? She now lives with Ryan’s parents in Sutter, California, who wouldn’t have it any other way. They love her as much as Ryan did, and couldn’t imagine life without their son’s best pal. Mollie and Ryan’s family can remember Ryan together.
