Dogs have an age-old reputation for being loyal. They remain faithful to their owners, giving them steadfast loyalty and companionship. Our dogs carry us through during times of loss and sorrow. They stay right by our side during the most challenging times, even the death of a loved one.
What happens when the dog loses one of us? If a dog is capable of compassion, surely he is capable of grief as well. Most dog lovers believe that dogs grieve. For skeptics, there’s no better example of this than the story of Tommy, a German Shepherd who attends church every day searching for his lost owner.
At the time Tommy’s story was posted, he was seven years old. Tommy’s owner was Maria, a 57-year-old woman who lived in Italy.
Maria adopted him as a pup. A devout Catholic, Maria attended mass every day. As her constant companion, Tommy accompanied her and sat quietly through the service.
When Maria passed away, the congregation learned how indeed devoted Tommy was to his owner. What happens then proves how deeply a dog’s loyalty runs. If this next part of Tommy’s story doesn’t convince of a dog’s capacity to love, then nothing will.
Because Maria’s funeral service was the last place Tommy saw Maria, he returns there every day. Parishioners say that he sits quietly through the entire mass, just as he did when he accompanied Maria.
Many think he is there to honor Maria, or perhaps others feel he is merely waiting for her to return. He may even be offering his silent prayer.
Whatever his reason, Tommy doesn’t bother anyone, and the church welcomes him along with everyone else. He remains calm and respectful through mass, then leaves just as quietly.
While some may think Tommy is just a creature of habit, others believe he’s simply an example of how much dogs genuinely love their owners. Tommy’s love for Maria didn’t end with her death. He continues their daily routine. Whether he’s honoring her memory or hoping she will return, no one can honestly know for sure.
The parish takes care of Tommy now in honor of Maria. He is fed and cared for. He is welcomed wherever he goes, especially welcome during mass. Through Tommy’s example, it’s easy to see that a dog’s love is truly selfless and pure.
